Weekly Update July 6

Hello Friends,

The Supreme Court has surprisingly voted not to destroy reproductive freedom, the latest in a string of pleasant surprises this term, including saving DACA and upholding protections for LGBTQ Americans against discrimination. But these victories are temporary, and we cannot lose sight of how important the courts are. We need to work extra hard to throw Trump out this fall and elect a Democratic Senate that can confirm better judges than the army of terrible ones Trump has imposed on us.

Take some time to visit the Payback Project – Indivisible’s site for flipping the Senate this fall. There are 11 vulnerable Senate Republicans who have failed America by allowing the Trump Administration to run amok for over three years. All of them had the opportunity to hold up his cruel and racist policy agenda. All of them had a chance last year to throw him out of office. None of them had even the bare minimum of human decency required to do either of those things. So now we defeat them.

Speak up for Asylum Seekers

That cruel policy agenda is not stopping for the election or the pandemic. They’re still trying to impose as much cruelty and hate as they can before time runs out. The administration has recently proposed rule changes that will gut what’s left of our asylum system in the U.S. You can read about those changes in this article.
Then submit a public comment opposing these changes at this link. The deadline to comment is July 15, so please make sure our voices of opposition are heard.
Help Sister District

Our partners with Sister District would like to draw our attention to a couple of upcoming events:

  • Virtual Phone Bank Wednesdays for Michigan, 2:30 – 5:00 pm: Join Sister District Sacramento every Wednesday to phone bank for our two candidates for the Michigan State House of Representatives – Rep. Laurie Pohutsky and Christine Morse. Real structural change starts at the state and local levels. Help us flip the Michigan State House blue and give Governor Whitmer one chamber to work with! Join on Zoom at this link.
  • Meet the Michigan State House Candidate, Saturday, June 27, 1 – 2 pm: Christine Morse is a current Kalamazoo County Commissioner.  She supports equality for all – “Every single issue impacting the state must be met with a higher value on equality for all citizens, regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexuality. Our majority Republican legislature has had many chances to lead on equality — but failed. Now is the time to make sure the law is expanded to protect every member of our community. ” Here is the Zoom link.
