Weekly Update – January 30, 2019

Last week we won a temporary victory in the shutdown fight. But you probably already know that Trump and the Congressional Republicans have another chance to hold the government hostage in three weeks. Please keep calling our MOCs, thank them for their strength, and remind them to keep saying NO to Trump’s racist border wall. For more information, check out Indivisible’s shutdown resource page.

Indivisible Sacramento Legislative Priorities

At our December meeting, we had a great discussion about what our priorities should be moving forward. Some of the issues people are most passionate about include health care, climate change, immigration, homelessness, the free press, and instant runoff voting. We are working on opportunities to discuss these issues this year. As one example, we are looking at getting a speaker who can focus on climate change for one of our spring meetings.

We will also be working on supporting legislation related to these issues. The deadline for California legislators to submit bills is coming up in late February. As soon as the deadline passes, Indivisible groups across California will begin to decide which ones we should put our energy behind, and we will do the same here in Sacramento. Keep watching this newsletter for information about state priorities!

350 Sacramento

Indivisible Sacramento is supporting 350 Sacramento’s efforts to advocate for a strong Climate Action Plan in Elk Grove. We encourage you to show up and support them at the2/13/19 Elk Grove City Council meeting. The meeting will be at Elk Grove City Hall, 8400 Laguna Palms Way, Elk Grove at 6:00 p.m.

Immigration Actions

Immigrant families are being processed by ICE at the southern border and then released to join family or friends who may live in New York, Washington, or many points in between, pending immigration court proceedings. Abuelas Responden is a local chapter of a national volunteer group whose members meet these families at Greyhound bus stations to provide them with food, backpacks filled with necessities, and other types of assistance. Join NorCal Resist and Abuelas Responden on Monday, February 4, 6pm, to learn about how you can participate in this humanitarian effort right here in Sacramento! First United Church of Sacramento,  2100 J St, Sacramento.

Next Meeting

Our meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month at Sierra2 Community Center (2791 24th Street). For our February meeting, we are thrilled to welcome guest speaker Senator Scott Wiener. Senator Wiener is a true friend of the group and the author of some of the most exciting legislation at the state level in recent years. We hope you can join us.
