WEEKLY UPDATE

Weekly Update, 6/18/18

It’s time for our monthly meeting! Wednesday night at 7:00, we’ll be back at our favorite spot: Room 10 at Sierra2 Center, 2791 24th Street. Our esteemed guest this month is Andrew Truman Kim from Flip the 14. He’s going to tell us exactly what we need to do to turn California’s red Congressional districts blue.

Family Separations

The Trump Administration is doubling down on their heartless decision to rip apart families at the border. This is a crime against humanity, and we cannot rest until it stops. If there is any good news about this horrific policy, it’s that the American public is overwhelmingly against it. We need to make sure our legislators know exactly how important this is to us.

We are fortunate to have two Senators who are fighting on this issue. Senator Feinstein introduced S.3036, a bill to stop the cruel and unnecessary family separations. Senator Harris is a co-sponsor. Remember to call them this week and thank them, and let them know we are on their side. Also remember to call your member of the House of Representatives and ask them to vote against Paul Ryan’s bogus “compromise” bill (also known as the Goodlatte-McCaul plan).

Local MOC phone numbers

Rep. Doris Matsui: (916) 698-5600
Rep. Ami Bera: (916) 635-0505
Sen. Kamala Harris: (916) 448-2787
Sen. Dianne Feinstein: (415) 393-0707

Health Care Repeal

The immigration news is horrific enough, but rumor has it that the Republicans in Congress are going to take another stab at sabotaging the Affordable Care Act this summer. We don’t have the details yet, but let’s start making calls now. Call your Members of Congress and urge them to fight hard for the Affordable Care Act this summer!

State Legislation

After you call about immigration and health care, please take a moment to think about the laws we’re trying to pass at the State level. Our website is a great resource for finding out about these. We’re very interested in SB822, Senator Wiener’s Net Neutrality bill. Call your Assembly Member and tell him or her that this is a top priority for you and for Indivisible Sacramento!

Also take some time to call your Senator about some important public safety bills. AB 931, which restricts the use of deadly force by law enforcement) and AB 3131, which would require police departments to hold hearings when they buy military grade equipment, are both up for a key committee vote in the Senate this week. Please tell your Senator that you support both!

You can find your State Senator and Assembly Member here.

We know there’s a lot to call about this week. Remember, your voice can make a difference – you just have to use it!
