Weekly Update – 4/8/19
Hello, Friends.
Can you make it to the Capitol Building on Tuesday or Wednesday? We need people to speak in favor of state laws that we support. It’s easy and it makes a measurable difference.
SB 392 would reduce police use of force. The committee hearing for SB 392 is on Tuesday, in Room 126 of the Capitol. We think this will be a packed room, so we’re planning to get there early. Please meet us on the North Steps of the building (facing L Street) at 8:00.
Then on Wednesday, two bills that Indivisible State Strong supports is will be discussed in the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee. AB 646 would restore voting rights to parolees. And AB 1217 would require sponsors of issue ads to disclose their financial contributors. That hearing is Wednesday, April 10th, starting at 9:00 a.m. in Room 444. We don’t have a designated meetup for this one – but if you have questions, please send us an e-mail.
Later on that day, we’ll be meeting at 1:10 at the North Steps to attend a hearing for SB458, which would ban the pesticide Chlorpyrifos.
And a reminder – you need to go through security to get into the Capitol, so remember to leave any items such as pocket knives, pepper spray, etc. at home.
Medicare for All Discussion
After a long day at the Capitol, why not check out a discussion about Medicare for All to cap it off? The California Nurses Association is hosting the discussion, and Indivisible Sacramento is a co-sponsor. The focus will be on disparities in care created by the current system an dhow Medicare for All could address them. The event starts at 6:00 on Wednesday at the Fruitridge Community Collaborative, 4625 44th Street.
Fast Track to Carbon Zero
Another great community event is going on this Saturday, April 13th at Sacramento City College. 350 Sacramento is holding a forum called Fast Track to Carbon Zero. It’s a day of speakers, entertainment, and breakout sessions to talk about how we can achieve zero emissions and stop global warming. There is a small entrance fee (between $5 and $15), but it will be waived for those who have difficulty paying. Also, they provide lunch! RSVP at the event’s page on 350 Sacramento’s website.
Next Meeting
We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at Sierra2 Center, Room 10. We’d love to have you join us! Our April meeting will be focusing on Climate Change. Join us on April 17th at 7:00 p.m. Sierra2 Center’s address is 2791 24th Street.
