Weekly Update 11/20/17
Stopping the Tax Scam bill is our top priority this week. (Thanksgiving is second.)
Many people have reached out to us and said they’re frustrated and feel helpless, since our California senators are already on our side, and there’s nobody to persuade. We have good news: Indivisible has rolled out its calling tool so you can call people from other states and ask them to reach out to their Senators. It’s easy, and you can do it from your own home.
If you don’t like your home, no problem. The SEIU is holding phone bank sessions on Mondays and Tuesday – including TOMORROW – from 2:00 to 5:00 and 5:00 to 8:00. Head on down to the SEIU-UHW office at 1911 F Street and get dialing. Don’t worry if you can’t stay the entire three hours, any amount of time is helpful.
A version of the tax scam bill passed the House of Representatives last week, so now we must stop it in the Senate. Here is the game plan:
- Call our California Senators and ask them to use Senate rules (such as withholding consent) to delay the tax bill. Senator Kamala Harris is at (916) 448 – 2787. Senator Dianne Feinstein can be reached at (415) 393-707. If those numbers are busy, click the senators’ names for their other office numbers.
- Make calls to folks from other states (as described above) and force their senators to vote NO. Remember, three Republican no votes will destroy this bill, and a number of GOP senators are on the fence.
- Let’s elect Doug Jones to the Senate from Alabama. You can donate to his campaign here or sign up to send some postcards to Alabama voters.
If you need a reminder why this bill is so awful, check out the Trump Tax Scam website. Otherwise, please get started. We need your help!
Voter Canvassing
After we stop the tax bill, we will continue our focus on the 2018 elections. California’s 10th district (the Modesto/Manteca area) is a top priority. Please come out and join a team of volunteers to knock on doors and talk to potential voters. The next canvassing session is on December 9th from 2:00 – 6:00 in the town of Riverbank. Meet at Sorensen Park, 2522 Donner Trail, Riverbank. To RSVP and get more details, please email res2jc@gmail.com.
Visit the Website
Did you know Indivisible Sacramento has a website? We are at www.indivisiblesacramento.com. Please check it out, as there is a wealth of information on the page, including calendars, newsletter posts, and contact information for legislators.
At our last meeting, we had a request to create a list of U.S. Senate Committees with phone and fax numbers so that people can reach out to committee staff in addition to our own legislators. We are working on this directory and will have it on the site in the near future.
Meetings
Speaking of our last meeting, we had a great Q&A session last week with Sydney Lewis, field representative for Senator Kamala Harris. We thank Sydney for visiting with us and talking about the tax scam bill, health care, gun control, immigration, and a whole range of other issues.
Our meetings are the third Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in Room 10 of Sierra2 Center for the Arts and Community, 2791 24th Street. Our next meeting will be December 20th.
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!
