Weekly Update 12/4/17
Hello, friends.
Alabama’s Senate election is next Tuesday. We don’t need to tell you what kind of person Roy Moore is, or why it would be such a disaster if he were elected to the Senate. If you haven’t already done so, please visit the Postcards to Voters website and learn how to send postcards to urge Alabamans to get out to the polls. They are trying to send a postcard to every single Democrat and Independent voter in Alabama, so let’s all do our part.
Indivisible Sacramento members turned out at Kupros Craft House last week to do just that. Thanks to all who joined in the postcard event, and special thanks to Organize, Win, Legislate for putting this event together. We sent over 400 postcards!
Tax Scam Bill
The Tax Scam bill passed the Senate. 51 GOP Senators proved that they care more about their billionaire donors than their constituents or the American people. They voted to give big corporations and wealthy people a whole bag full of presents: an end to the estate tax, a big cut to the corporate tax rate, and a giant kick in the gut to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
But this is not a done deal. Because the Senate and House both passed different bills, they need to come up with a version that both can agree on. This means that at least one chamber – and probably both of them – will have to vote again. We will need to keep calling our representatives and urging them to vote no. If you are free tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, join the Sacramento Central Labor Council for a rally at Congressman Tom McClintock’s office. Congressman McClintock voted no last time, and we have to put pressure on him to make sure he doesn’t wimp out next time. The event lasts from 9:45 a.m. until 11:00 a.m at 2200A Douglas Blvd in Roseville.
Another way you can help – Swing Left and Not One Penny have created a fund where you can make a donation that will be spread among the opponents of all of the vulnerable lawmakers who voted for this awful tax bill. They did not listen to the American people so no we have to punish them by kicking them out of office.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 20th at 7:00 p.m. in Room 10 at Sierra 2 Center. The address is 2791 24th Street.
We’ll be joined by special guest speaker, Jill LaVine, Sacramento County Registrar of Voters. She will be talking to us about the new voting procedures that will be in effect next year. Hope you can make it!
Voter Canvassing
December 9th – Voter canvassing in Riverbank (about an hour south of Sacramento). The 10th Congressional District is a swing district, and an opportunity for a Democratic pickup. We’re talking to voters, registering new ones, and gathering information that will help the good guys win in 2018. RSVP and get details (including information on transportation and start times) at res2jc@gmail.com.
December 10th – Join Cal Away Team in talking to voters who have skipped recent midterm elections. These are voters who are on our side – we just need to remind them to show up next year. Details at the link above.
