Weekly Update 12/18/17
Hello, Friends.
Our monthly meeting is coming up this Wednesday! As usual, we’ll be at Sierra2 Center in Room 10, starting at 7:00. Jill LaVine, Sacramento County’s Registrar of Voters, will be our featured speaker. She is going to talk to us about the new voting system that California will be using next year. The address is 2791 24th Street in the Curtis Park neighborhood. Hope you can make it! Celebrating Successes The Indivisible Guide celebrated its one year birthday last week. We have plenty of work to do this week, but please take a moment to think about all we’ve done. Because of our movement, because of millions of dedicated Americans from coast to coast, there is a united opposition to the Trump agenda. We have prevented the worst cuts to the Affordable Care Act, and we’re making sure they’ll pay a huge political price if they go forward with the Tax Scam Bill. And just last week, we helped elect a new progressive Senator in ALABAMA! Hats off to all of you who helped, including those who joined us to send postcards to Alabama voters. What we’re doing is making a difference. Trump’s Tax Scam We still have one last chance to defeat the Tax Scam this week. The House will vote in the next couple of days, with the Senate due to vote later in the week. The bad news is that most GOP Senators have already declared their plans to vote for this bill, even though it is a shameless giveaway to the rich, and even though every poll shows that the American people overwhelmingly hate this plan. The good news is that there are still a few Senators, such as Arizona’s Jeff Flake, whom we may be able to convince otherwise. And if the vote is delayed for any reason, it will have to wait until the Senate reconvenes next year. So please call your members of Congress as often as you can to register your opposition to this bill. And then log on to the Trump Tax Scam call tool, which will connect you to voters in other states so that you can ask them to make calls to their Senators as well. Dream Act The other item on Congress’s agenda this week is a government funding bill. Senator Kamala Harris and a number of other Democrats are refusing to vote for a budget bill unless there is a deal to protect Dreamers. Senator Feinstein did not make such a promise, and she voted for a temporary spending deal two weeks ago. Please call her and let her know that Californians do not want her to surrender again! Here are Senator Feinstein’s office numbers: Fresno: (559) 485-7430 California Away Team The next California Away Team event is on January 14th in Fair Oaks. They’ll be knocking on doors and reminding voters to show up for the midterm elections, which are now less than a year away. Find details at the Cal Away Team website. That’s all for now. See you on Wednesday! |
